Bloodgood is both one of the most well known and best performing of the purple leafed maples. Providing interest for much of the year, the purple-red foliage holds its colour well from the emerging leaves in the Spring until the end of Summer. During the Autumn, the leaves turn a deep blood-red giving the plant its name.
Though this is a hardy variety, it prefers to be situated in a sheltered location out of prevailing cold winds. Japanese maples as a rule dislike heavy waterlogged soil, so best suited to container growing if you soil comes under this category.
